In the wet pastures of Ballymacshaneboy, County Limerick, a curious earthwork rises from the gently sloping ground.

Moated site, Ballymacshaneboy, Co. Limerick

This moated site, first recorded on Ordnance Survey maps in 1840, presents itself as a slightly raised circular platform measuring about 25 metres north to south and 34 metres east to west. The platform sits behind defensive earthworks that tell the story of medieval Ireland, when such fortified homesteads dotted the landscape.

The site’s defences consist of a scarp dropping down to a water-filled ditch, or fosse, which runs around the western side from south through west to northwest. Beyond the fosse lies an external bank; together, these features create a formidable barrier roughly five metres wide. The fosse itself, with its base width of nearly four metres, would have held water year-round, providing both defence and a ready water supply. Time and agriculture have taken their toll on the eastern portion, where a field boundary now cuts through what was once the northeastern section of the enclosure, leaving no visible surface traces on that side.

Historical maps reveal how our understanding of the site has evolved over time. The 1840 Ordnance Survey depicted it as two sub-rectangular areas, whilst by 1897 cartographers recorded it as a raised square platform. Modern satellite imagery from Google Earth and Digital Globe shows the monument as a square area still clearly defined by its tree-lined fosse and bank, though cattle have worn a metre-wide break through the northwestern defences. These moated sites, typically dating from the 13th to 14th centuries, were often home to Anglo-Norman settlers or Gaelicised Norman families who needed defendable farmsteads in what could be hostile territory.
