This rectangular moated site, measuring approximately 35 metres from northeast to southwest and 32 metres from northwest to southeast, reveals itself through cropmarks that show the outline of ancient fosses or moats. These defensive ditches, varying between one and four metres in width, form a complete rectangle that once protected whatever structure stood within.

The site was first spotted by Simon Dowling and has since been documented through Google Earth imagery from July 2018. Such moated sites are relatively common across Ireland, particularly in the eastern counties, and typically date from the Anglo-Norman period between the 12th and 14th centuries. They were often built by wealthy farmers or minor lords who needed fortified homesteads but couldn’t afford the expense of a full stone castle.

What makes this particular site intriguing is its clarity in aerial photography; the cropmarks are exceptionally well-defined, allowing viewers to trace the full circuit of the moats. These marks appear because crops grow differently over buried archaeological features, with plants above the filled-in ditches typically showing darker, more vigorous growth due to the deeper, moisture-retaining soil. While no visible structures remain above ground today, the site offers a glimpse into the defensive concerns and settlement patterns of medieval Wexford, when such fortified farmsteads dotted the landscape.
