First recorded on the 1841 Ordnance Survey six-inch map and again on its 1909 edition, this rectangular enclosure once measured approximately 50 metres from northwest to southeast and 40 metres from east to west. Today, no visible traces remain above ground; the site has been absorbed back into the landscape, its defensive ditches filled in and levelled by centuries of agricultural activity.

Moated sites like this one were typically built between the 13th and 14th centuries, serving as fortified farmsteads for Anglo-Norman colonists or prosperous Irish families. The moat, a water-filled ditch surrounding a raised platform, would have protected a timber hall or tower house along with associated farm buildings. These sites represent an important chapter in Ireland’s medieval history, marking the transformation of the landscape during a period of colonisation and cultural exchange.

The site’s documentation comes from the Archaeological Inventory of County Laois, published by the Dublin Stationery Office in 1995. Compiled by P. David Sweetman, Olive Alcock, and Bernie Moran, this comprehensive survey catalogued hundreds of archaeological monuments across the county, preserving knowledge of sites that might otherwise be forgotten. Though this particular moated site has vanished from view, its presence on historical maps ensures its story remains part of Laois’s rich archaeological record.
