This subrectangular enclosure, measuring roughly 57 metres northeast to southwest and 26 metres across, commands spectacular views in every direction from its elevated position. The site’s defensive advantages are immediately apparent; steep, rocky scarps ranging from 6 to 8 metres in height define most of its perimeter, with exposed limestone bedrock visible along the southeastern edge.

The enclosure’s most intriguing features reveal themselves upon closer inspection. Along the southwestern side, a fosse or defensive ditch, approximately 7 metres wide and a metre deep, runs parallel to a 2.5-metre-high scarp studded with rock outcrops. A narrow stony bank, possibly the remnant of an ancient field boundary, skirts this fosse and continues towards the north-northeast. The main entrance appears to have been located on the northeastern side, where a 2-metre-wide gap in the form of a slumped, ramp-like opening provides access to the interior.

Within the enclosure, archaeological features hint at the site’s past occupation. A large, D-shaped raised platform occupying about 28 by 18 metres dominates the northwestern portion of the interior, defined by a curving scarp approximately one metre high. Just to the southwest of this platform lies what may have been a hut site, whilst a narrow stony bank, measuring 1.6 metres wide and 65 centimetres high, stretches across the southwestern end of the interior space. These features, recorded in the Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo, paint a picture of a well-fortified medieval settlement that once controlled this strategic hilltop position above the river valley.
