This rectangular earthwork, measuring approximately 60 metres west-northwest to east-southeast and 50 metres north-northeast to south-southwest, once formed a defensive enclosure typical of Anglo-Norman settlement patterns in medieval Ireland. Though invisible at ground level when crops are growing, aerial photographs taken by the Ordnance Survey Ireland in 2005 reveal its ghostly outline as cropmarks, where the ancient ditches and banks affect plant growth patterns.

First recorded on the 1839 Ordnance Survey six-inch map, the site consists of a flat central platform surrounded by an impressive series of defensive features. Archaeological surveys conducted by Barry in 1977 documented earthen banks standing 1.5 metres high and wide, encircled by dry moats measuring 4.5 metres across and 2 metres deep. Beyond these inner defences, outer banks reaching a metre in height provided an additional layer of protection. This multi-layered defensive arrangement suggests the site once held considerable importance, possibly serving as a fortified farmstead or minor manor house during the medieval period.

Moated sites like this one represent a fascinating chapter in Irish medieval history, particularly in counties like Wexford where Anglo-Norman influence was strong from the 12th century onwards. These earthworks typically date from the 13th to 14th centuries and were constructed by colonising families seeking to establish secure homesteads in what was often contested territory. The survival of such features, even as subtle traces visible only from the air, provides valuable insights into medieval settlement patterns and the defensive concerns of those who shaped the Irish landscape centuries ago.
