On a gently sloping west-facing hillside in County Galway's pastureland sits the remnants of a medieval moated site at Carnaun.

This square earthwork, measuring 34 metres on each side, consists of a central raised platform surrounded by a water-filled ditch, or fosse, with defensive banks on both the inside and outside. The inner bank rises about a metre above the interior and 1.5 metres from the outside, whilst the outer bank, though lower at just 30 centimetres high externally, still forms a clear boundary. Trees and bushes have colonised both banks over the centuries, and a modern field wall now runs along the southeastern outer bank.

The site’s long history can be traced through old Ordnance Survey maps; the 1838 edition shows it as a roughly circular enclosure with a roofed house in the northwest quadrant, whilst by 1933 the building appears unroofed. Today, three sunken rectangular structures remain visible in this northwest corner, their mortared stone walls and foundation lines each measuring roughly 8 metres long by 4 metres wide. One of these ruins likely corresponds to the building marked on those historic maps. A causewayed entrance, about 2 metres wide, breaks through the earthworks at the northeast, though the pathway that once led from it, noted in earlier surveys as running northeast then curving north and northwest, has likely been lost to the construction of a nearby sports field.

Beyond the main enclosure, additional features hint at the site’s former extent. A smaller rectangular annexe, measuring 18 by 8 metres and defined by a low grassed bank, adjoins the southwest side of the outer bank. From the monument’s southern corner, a shallow ditch runs west-southwest for about 20 metres, possibly serving as a leat to channel water into the defensive fosse. The centre of the site now houses a modern tree plantation surrounded by a drystone wall, a reminder that these ancient monuments continue to evolve as part of the living landscape.
