In the gently rolling countryside of County Wexford, a rectangular earthwork marks the site of a medieval moated enclosure at Coonoge.

First recorded on the 1839 Ordnance Survey map, this grass-covered site measures approximately 58 metres north to south and 31 metres east to west, sitting within a subtle east-facing fold in the low-lying landscape. The enclosure’s original defensive moats remain visible as shallow depressions; the western and northern sections have been backfilled over the centuries, leaving only slight dips in the ground surface, whilst the eastern moat survives as a small stream running north to south, still measuring about 5 metres wide and 1.6 metres deep.

The site represents a type of medieval settlement that was once common across the Irish countryside, particularly in areas of Anglo-Norman influence. These moated sites typically date from the 13th to 14th centuries and served as defended farmsteads for prosperous tenants or minor lords. The rectangular platform would have supported timber buildings, possibly including a hall, agricultural structures, and living quarters, all protected by the water-filled moats that served both as defensive features and drainage systems in what was often marshy ground.

Today, the Coonoge site appears as little more than a raised platform in a field, its ancient purpose revealed only through careful archaeological observation. The spring that feeds the eastern moat emerges about 30 metres southeast of the enclosure’s corner, maintaining the water feature that has defined this site for centuries. Recorded in Barry’s 1977 survey and later included in the Archaeological Inventory of County Wexford published in 1996, this modest earthwork offers a tangible connection to the medieval agricultural landscape that once dominated this part of Ireland.
