Moated site, Creeve, Co. Longford

In the townland of Creeve, County Longford, a medieval moated site sits quietly on wet, low-lying ground, its earthen banks and ditches still visible despite centuries of weathering and human interference.

The site consists of a roughly rectangular enclosure measuring approximately 48 metres from north-northeast to south-southwest and 33 metres from west-northwest to east-southeast. This space would have once contained buildings, likely a manor house or farmstead belonging to Anglo-Norman settlers who arrived in Ireland during the 12th and 13th centuries.

The defensive features of this moated site remain remarkably intact, though dense vegetation now obscures much of the detail. A low inner bank of earth and stone, ranging from 10 to 35 centimetres in height and about 3.2 metres wide, forms the first line of defence. Beyond this lies a substantial fosse, or water-filled ditch, measuring 4.1 metres across and plunging to a depth of 1.45 metres. The outer bank, more imposing at 70 centimetres high and 3.5 metres wide, would have presented a formidable barrier to any unwanted visitors. These concentric earthworks are typical of moated sites throughout Ireland, which served both defensive and status purposes for their medieval inhabitants.

Quarrying activities have unfortunately damaged portions of the site, particularly at the east-southeast and south-southwest corners, and the original entrance can no longer be identified. Despite these disturbances, the site remains an important example of medieval settlement patterns in the Irish midlands. When surveyor Patrick F. O’Donovan documented the site in May 2012, he noted that dense overgrowth made detailed inspection challenging; a common fate for many of Ireland’s lesser-known archaeological sites that lie forgotten in fields and woodlands across the countryside.
