The site measures 46 metres from northwest to southeast and 37 metres from southwest to northeast, originally defined by substantial earthen banks and ditches. Today, the northwestern and northeastern boundaries are still clearly visible, with banks rising to about 1.1 metres in height internally and ditches reaching depths of 0.8 metres. These historic earthworks have been incorporated into modern field fences, a common fate for many medieval structures in the Irish countryside.

The southwestern and southeastern banks were unfortunately levelled around 1981, though their outlines remain traceable on the ground for those who know where to look. The site has seen various modifications over the centuries; recent drainage channels run through the interior, whilst a stream flows along the outside of the northwestern bank and a pond sits midway along the northeastern boundary. These water features aren’t merely incidental; they likely reflect the original medieval preference for sites with natural water defences and readily available water supplies.

This earthwork is situated close to another moated site to the south, suggesting this area of Cork held particular strategic or economic importance during the medieval period. Such earthworks typically date from the 13th to 14th centuries when Anglo-Norman settlers established fortified farmsteads throughout Ireland. These sites served dual purposes as both defensive structures and statements of authority in the landscape, housing everything from manor houses to agricultural buildings within their protective banks and ditches.
