This ancient enclosure measures approximately 33 metres from north to south and 43 metres from east to west, with its boundaries marked by a substantial fosse, or defensive ditch. First spotted and reported by Jean-Charles Caillère whilst examining Google Earth images from 2009 and 2018, the site represents one of many such earthworks scattered across the Irish countryside that hint at centuries of human habitation and fortification.

The enclosure’s geometric precision and substantial ditch suggest it may have served as a moated site, a type of medieval homestead that became popular in Ireland during the Anglo-Norman period. These sites typically consisted of a raised platform surrounded by a water-filled moat, providing both defence and a statement of status for their inhabitants. The proximity of another possible ringfort, located just 80 metres to the east-northeast, raises intriguing questions about the relationship between these two structures; were they contemporary settlements, or do they represent different phases of occupation spanning centuries?

Today, the site exists quietly within working farmland, its outlines best appreciated from above through satellite imagery rather than from ground level. Like many archaeological features in Ireland’s agricultural landscape, it serves as a reminder that beneath the everyday fields and pastures lies a complex tapestry of historical occupation, from prehistoric ringforts to medieval moated sites, each layer adding to our understanding of how people lived, worked, and defended themselves throughout Irish history.
