This rectangular earthwork, measuring 50 metres east to west and 40 metres north to south, sits within a carefully constructed system of banks and ditches that once provided both protection and status to its inhabitants. The site is defined by an earthen bank on its northern side, standing just over 5 metres wide with varying heights, whilst the remaining sides are marked by scarps that drop between 60 and 90 centimetres.

What makes this site particularly intriguing is its southern defensive feature; a substantial earthen bank measuring 10.5 metres in width, separated from the main enclosure by a fosse or defensive ditch. This ditch varies in width from about a metre to 4 metres at its eastern end, creating a formidable barrier that would have deterred unwanted visitors. The southern bank has been incorporated into later field boundaries on both the eastern and northern sides, whilst a farm track now runs along its western edge, showing how the landscape has been continuously adapted and reused over the centuries.

A causewayed entrance at the southwest corner provides access to the enclosure, though this is likely a later addition rather than part of the original medieval design. First recorded as a ‘rectangular enclosure’ in the Sites and Monuments Record in 1992 and subsequently in the Record of Monuments and Places in 1996, this grass-covered site stands as a quiet reminder of Clare’s medieval past, when such moated sites served as both practical defensive structures and symbols of authority in the Irish countryside.
