Just north of a field boundary in County Limerick's gently rolling pastures sits a medieval moated site that has become thoroughly overgrown with dense scrub.

Though it appeared clearly on the 1924 Ordnance Survey map as a rectangular enclosure measuring roughly 80 metres northeast to southwest and 40 metres north to south, today’s visitors will need to peer through the vegetation to make out its distinctive earthwork features.

The site consists of a rectangular area defended by an ingenious system of double banks with a ditch, or fosse, running between them. The inner bank stands about 1.2 metres high on its outer face, though it’s considerably lower on the interior side at just 15 centimetres. This earthen rampart runs along the eastern and southern sides before transitioning into a scarped edge about a metre high on the western and northern boundaries. Several gaps punctuate these defences; two narrow openings on the south side and two wider ones on the north, with one of the northern gaps likely serving as the original entrance, complete with what appears to be a causeway across the fosse and a curious pile of stones.

Between the inner and outer banks runs a flat-bottomed ditch about 1.45 metres wide that maintains a remarkably uniform depth around most of the perimeter. The outer bank, standing about a metre high on its inner face but only 30 centimetres on the exterior, survives along the north, east, and west sides, with a notable break at the northwest corner. Over the centuries, this outer defensive work has been incorporated into the local field boundary system, becoming part of the agricultural landscape. The site was documented by O’Kelly in 1942-3, whose plan remains an invaluable record of this hidden piece of medieval Ireland.
