In a level pasture at Gardenfield, County Limerick, a rectangular earthwork marks the site of what appears to be a medieval moated enclosure.

The site measures 32 metres from north to south and 31 metres from east to west, defined by an earthen bank that rises nearly a metre above the surrounding field on its outer face, whilst standing about half a metre high when viewed from within. Running around the outside of this bank is a defensive ditch, or fosse, measuring 2.7 metres wide and 0.7 metres deep; a common feature of medieval fortified sites throughout Ireland.

The southern side of the enclosure has been incorporated into the modern field boundary system, suggesting centuries of agricultural continuity in this landscape. A recent farm gateway, roughly 4 metres wide, now breaches the centre of this southern bank, providing practical access but interrupting the original defensive circuit. Time and nature have taken their toll on the monument, with thorn bushes and dense undergrowth claiming the earthen banks, their tangled growth gradually creeping into the interior space.

Today, the enclosed area serves as rough grazing land, a quiet reminder of medieval settlement patterns in rural Limerick. These moated sites, found scattered across the Irish countryside, typically date from the 13th to 15th centuries and were often associated with Anglo-Norman colonisation, though some may have been adopted by Gaelic lords. Whether this particular example served as a defended farmstead, a minor manor house, or fulfilled some other purpose remains part of its enduring mystery.
