Moated site, Garraun North, Co. Galway
On the south-facing slope of a hill in County Galway's pastureland lies a rectangular moated site that offers a glimpse into Ireland's medieval past.
Moated site, Garraun North, Co. Galway
The site at Garraun North measures approximately 38 metres northwest to southeast and 23 metres northeast to southwest, and whilst time has taken its toll, the defensive earthworks remain clearly visible. The monument consists of two earthen banks with a fosse, or defensive ditch, running between them. The inner bank stands most impressively along its western and northern sections, reaching heights of 1.7 metres, whilst the broad, flat-bottomed fosse encircles the entire site with widths of over 2 metres and depths ranging from 1.3 to 1.7 metres.
The outer defensive bank, though considerably more weathered, can still be traced from the southern side around to the west and northwest. A possible causeway crosses the fosse at the southeast corner, providing what would have been the original access point, with a corresponding 8-metre gap in the inner bank on the eastern side. Within the enclosure itself, only fragments of the associated castle remain visible; a short section of stone walling, measuring 2 metres long and 0.4 metres high, survives in the east-southeast corner. The northwest portion of the interior contains traces of what appears to be a rectangular structure, defined by a stony bank that may represent either an internal division from the site’s original use or a later addition to the monument.
Historical records from Lynch Athy’s 1913-14 survey mention another square enclosure that once existed beyond the ditch, running up to its bank, though this feature is no longer clearly visible. A large pond to the south-southwest of the monument adds to the site’s defensive landscape. The monument has been recognised for its historical significance and is protected under a preservation order issued in 1973, ensuring this piece of medieval Ireland remains for future generations to explore and study.
