Near the top of a gently sloping hillside in County Tipperary South lies the remains of a medieval moated site at Gortnabarnan.

This rectangular earthwork, measuring 36 metres north to south and 38 metres east to west, consists of a substantial flat-topped earthen bank that once protected whatever structures stood within. The bank itself is impressive in scale, ranging from 4.4 to 4.8 metres wide overall, with a walkable top about 1.6 metres across. Inside the enclosure, the bank rises about half a metre, whilst on the outside it stands considerably taller at 1.3 to 1.8 metres high, overlooking a wide defensive ditch or fosse that surrounds the entire site.

The fosse that rings the earthwork is equally substantial, with a flat bottom about 4 metres wide and an overall width reaching up to 5.1 metres in places. Though time has softened its edges, the ditch still reaches depths of 0.7 to 1.1 metres. Later modifications are evident on the eastern side, where a north-south lane now runs alongside the site; here the bank has been built up higher, reaching 1.5 metres on the interior, and the fosse has been filled in from the northeast to southeast corners. The outer edge of the medieval ditch has been cleverly incorporated into a modern field boundary. At the southwest corner, a small spring well has been discovered in the base of the fosse, its 0.6 metre square opening lined with drystone walls of local rubble sandstone on three sides, with a muddy channel running northward along the ditch bottom for drainage.

The original entrance to the site can still be identified as a 5-metre gap in the bank at the western end of the north side, now crossed by a modern stone causeway of the same width spanning the fosse at the northwest corner. The interior of the enclosure slopes gently northward and remains dry and clear of overgrowth, making it easy to explore. On the southwest side of the interior, a slightly raised oval area measuring about 12 by 10 metres and ringed with mature ash trees presents something of a mystery; it may mark the location of former buildings or structures, though its exact purpose remains uncertain. Compiled by Jean Farrelly and uploaded to archaeological records in August 2011, this site offers a tangible connection to Ireland’s medieval past, when such moated enclosures provided security for farmsteads and minor manor houses across the countryside.
