Moated site, Kilgawny, Co. Westmeath

The moated site at Kilgawny sits atop a natural rise surrounded by wet pasture and marshy ground, a strategic placement that would have offered both defensive advantages and protection from the damp conditions below.

First recorded on the 1837 Ordnance Survey map as a tree-lined earthwork, this medieval monument takes the form of a rectangular enclosure measuring approximately 37 metres from north-northwest to south-southeast and 28 metres from west-southwest to east-northeast. The site consists of three defensive elements: an inner earthen bank, a fosse (or ditch), and an outer bank, though centuries of weathering have left these features in varying states of preservation.

The best-preserved sections of the monument can be found along the north-northwest and south-southeast sides, where the intervening fosse remains steep, wide and flat-bottomed, whilst the inner and outer banks are most prominent. Elsewhere, the defences have been considerably reduced; the inner bank has been breached at several corners, and the outer bank shows significant gaps, particularly at the southeast corner. Despite this deterioration, the interior maintains a fairly smooth surface that rises gently towards the centre, where archaeologists have identified the remains of a long rectangular house site, catalogued separately as WM017-071001-. Just outside the monument to the south-southeast lies a low, oval-shaped mound whose purpose remains unknown.

This moated site represents a type of defended homestead that was particularly popular in medieval Ireland, typically associated with Anglo-Norman settlement patterns from the 13th and 14th centuries. The monument received official protection through a preservation order in April 1987, and whilst it’s now surrounded by forestry that somewhat obscures its original setting, aerial photography still reveals its distinctive rectangular footprint. The Archaeological Survey of Ireland completed detailed surveys and drawings of the site, documenting its current condition and ensuring its features are properly recorded for future study.
