In the rolling pastures along the eastern side of a road near the Sligo-Roscommon border lies a remarkably well-preserved medieval moated site at Killaraght.

This raised square earthwork, measuring 31 metres on each side, consists of an elaborate defensive system with two concentric earthen banks separated by deep ditches, or fosses as they’re known in archaeological terms. The inner bank stands about 1.1 metres high on its outer face and features a distinctive flat top with a low rim, whilst the more substantial outer bank rises to 1.6 metres with broad, flat-topped construction that’s particularly impressive along the eastern and southern sides.

The site’s defensive fosses tell their own story; the intervening ditch between the banks maintains its steep-sided, flat-bottomed profile at 2.6 metres wide, whilst the external fosse has largely silted up over the centuries, now visible only as a shallow depression along certain sections. The original entrance remains clearly defined at the eastern end of the northern side, where gaps in both banks, measuring 2 metres and 1.8 metres respectively, align with a 2.5-metre-wide causeway crossing the fosse. A single large stone still marks the western side of this causeway, perhaps placed there centuries ago to guide visitors or mark the threshold.

Within the level, grass-covered interior, a low earthen rise occupies the centre, measuring roughly 9.5 by 3.6 metres and standing 0.3 metres high. Along its eastern edge, a line of closely set stones extends for about 2 metres, with similar stonework possibly present on the western side, suggesting the foundations of a central structure, likely the main residence or tower. Just outside the main enclosure, a triangular earthen platform attached to the southwestern corner hints at additional structures, perhaps outbuildings or later additions. A relict field boundary extending 55 metres from this corner connects the site to the wider medieval landscape, though today a modern bungalow sits just 16 metres to the west, a reminder of how the past and present coexist in the Irish countryside.
