Moated site, Kilmacow, Co. Cork

This moated site, first recorded on a 1774 map of the local manors, sits on low ground between two ridges running east to west. Today, visitors will find a slightly raised square platform measuring roughly 45 to 46 metres on each side, occupying the southeast corner of a field. The site’s defining features include an earthen scarp that varies in height from 0.7 to 1.4 metres, topped in places by a low bank that has been incorporated into the modern field boundary system.

The defensive nature of this medieval earthwork becomes apparent when examining its fosses, or ditches, which still survive along the eastern and southern sides. These ditches, originally designed to hold water as a defensive barrier, measure about six metres wide and up to 0.8 metres deep in places, though some sections have been recut for modern drainage purposes. The eastern fosse is particularly well-preserved along its northern section, where it’s defined by an external earthen bank standing 1.4 metres high on the interior side. An interesting feature is an angled earthen bank that crosses the fosse, connecting various defensive elements of the site.

Local memory preserves details that archaeology alone cannot tell; residents recall that before partial levelling in the 1970s, the site was far more impressive, with high earthen banks surrounding the entire square and deep, waterlogged ditches that would have made formidable barriers. The deliberate filling of the banks into the fosses on the north and west sides has obscured much of the site’s original character, though enough remains to understand its defensive layout. While no internal structures are visible today beneath the grass-covered interior, the site’s inclusion on 18th-century maps as a ‘Danish Fort’ hints at a long-standing local tradition connecting this place to Ireland’s Viking age, though its actual origins likely date to the later medieval period when such moated sites were commonly built by Anglo-Norman settlers.
