On the summit of a rolling hill in Kilvarnet North, County Sligo, lies the remnants of a medieval moated site that offers a glimpse into Ireland's defensive architectural past.

The main structure consists of a square platform measuring approximately 16.5 metres on each side, with a smaller rectangular annexe attached to its eastern edge. The platform’s southern and western boundaries are marked by a metre-high scarp with a subtle internal lip, whilst the northern side features a degraded stony bank, now covered in sod and showing gaps from centuries of weathering. A shallow defensive ditch, or fosse, runs along the western base of the scarp, a common feature of such fortified sites.

The interior of the main platform has been carefully levelled, with the ground raised on the southern and western sides to compensate for the natural slope of the hill. Two shallow depressions mark the northwest and southeast sections of the interior; these likely indicate the locations of former structures or activity areas. The adjoining annexe, measuring roughly 12.5 by 10.3 metres, slopes naturally eastward and is enclosed by an earthen bank on its northern side that stands about 60 centimetres high. A five-metre gap in this bank probably served as an entrance, though centuries of use and abandonment have left the junction between the annexe and main site somewhat disturbed and uneven.

Unfortunately, a large quarry has since eaten into the southern portion of the annexe, making it impossible to determine the original extent of this secondary enclosure. Despite this damage, the site remains a significant example of medieval defensive architecture in County Sligo, documented in detail by the Archaeological Inventory compiled by Ursula Egan and her colleagues in 2005. Such moated sites were typically constructed by Anglo-Norman settlers or Gaelicised families between the 13th and 15th centuries, serving as fortified homesteads that combined residential, agricultural, and defensive functions in Ireland’s contested medieval landscape.
