On a south-facing slope in Knockagarry, County Cork, sits a well-preserved moated site that offers a glimpse into medieval Irish settlement patterns.

The rectangular earthwork measures 54 metres northwest to southeast and 36 metres northeast to southwest, enclosed by a substantial earthen bank that rises 0.4 metres on the interior side and an impressive 1.5 metres on the exterior. A defensive fosse, or ditch, runs around the outside perimeter, though it’s now almost completely filled in on the southeast side where a farm track has been built across it. The bank itself, now densely overgrown with vegetation, shows breaks at roughly the midway points along each of its four sides, with a slight causeway crossing the fosse at the northwestern entrance.

The interior of the site slopes gently down towards the southeast and shows clear evidence of its long history of use. In the southern quadrant, a scarp extends about 15 metres inward from the southwestern bank, whilst the 1936 Ordnance Survey map marks the presence of a souterrain; an underground passage typical of early medieval Irish settlements; located further to the northeast but roughly in line with this feature. Cultivation ridges running northwest to southeast across the interior demonstrate that the site continued to be used for agricultural purposes long after its original defensive function became obsolete.

This monument has been recognised for its archaeological importance since at least 1981, when it was catalogued by Barry, and is now protected under a preservation order issued in 1972. The site represents one of many moated settlements scattered across North Cork, likely dating from the Anglo-Norman period when such fortified farmsteads provided both security and status for their inhabitants whilst serving as centres for agricultural production in the surrounding landscape.
