In a level pasture at Knockmore, County Limerick, lies a rectangular earthen enclosure that offers a glimpse into Ireland's medieval past.

Moated site, Knockmore, Co. Limerick

This moated site measures 64 metres from north to south and 23.4 metres from east to west, surrounded by an earthen bank that rises 0.75 metres on the interior side and an impressive 1.75 metres on the exterior. A fosse, or defensive ditch, runs around the outside of the bank, measuring 0.75 metres deep and just over 2 metres wide. The entire structure is now covered in a dense overgrowth of bushes, giving it an almost forgotten quality that adds to its mysterious appeal.

The enclosure’s design reveals careful medieval planning, with a causewayed entrance positioned midway along the eastern side, spanning 2.6 metres in width. The corners of the earthen bank are notably rounded and stand higher than the sides, a construction technique that likely provided additional structural stability. Whilst cattle have created breaks through the bank at the south-southwest and south-southeast corners, and modern field boundaries and drainage now intersect with the ancient fosse on the western and southwestern sides, the site’s original form remains remarkably intact.

The interior of the enclosure presents its own intriguing features. Though largely level, the central area contains a series of undulations with no discernible pattern, possibly evidence of former structures or activity areas. Dense vegetation has claimed the fringes of the interior space, particularly along the northern and western edges, creating a natural barrier that has perhaps helped preserve this medieval site. Documented by Denis Power and captured in aerial photographs from 2002, this moated site stands as a tangible reminder of the defensive homesteads that once dotted the Irish countryside during the medieval period.
