Moated site, Lislaughtin, Co. Kerry

Tucked into the corner of a field near Lislaughtin in County Kerry, this medieval moated site reveals itself through a series of earthen banks and ditches that have survived centuries of agricultural activity.

The rectangular enclosure, measuring 52 metres north to south and 66 metres east to west, consists of multiple defensive features: an inner bank rising up to 2 metres high externally, a fosse (defensive ditch), and traces of an outer bank. While modern tracks and field boundaries have obscured portions of the site, particularly along its eastern and southern edges where they’ve been incorporated into the existing fieldbanks, the northern through western sections preserve the clearest evidence of the original triple defence system.

The construction details hint at considerable medieval engineering effort. The inner bank, which varies from 4 metres wide at its base to an impressive 10 metres on the western side, stands about a metre above the interior ground level. Between this and the outer defences lies the fosse, ranging from 3 to 5 metres wide, though it’s only visible where the site remains undisturbed. The outer bank, lower and broader at 6 metres wide and 0.8 metres high, completes the defensive arrangement. These measurements suggest a substantial fortification, likely built to protect a farmstead or small manor during the Anglo-Norman period when such moated sites were common across Ireland.

The interior holds its own mysteries, sitting noticeably higher than the surrounding landscape with a sharp rise towards the bank in the southeast corner. A curious feature presents itself in the eastern sector: a long, narrow depression measuring 22 by 6 metres, which might indicate the location of former buildings or other structures within the enclosure. Such moated sites typically date from the 13th to 14th centuries and served both defensive and status purposes, marking the homes of Anglo-Norman settlers or Gaelicised lords who adopted this architectural style.
