In the townland of Lisnadarragh, County Cavan, the remnants of what was once a medieval moated site have all but vanished from the landscape.

Early Ordnance Survey maps from 1836 and 1876 marked this spot with a simple rectangular enclosure labelled ‘Fort’, suggesting it held some significance for local map makers of the time. The site measured roughly 32 metres by 26.5 metres, forming a modest rectangular footprint that would have been typical of Anglo-Norman defensive structures scattered across the Irish countryside.

When archaeologist Davies surveyed the location in 1948, he could just barely make out the rectangular outline of the original fortification, though by then the site had already been substantially levelled. These moated sites, common throughout medieval Ireland, typically consisted of a raised platform surrounded by a water-filled ditch; a practical defensive arrangement that provided both security and status to their inhabitants. The Lisnadarragh example would have served as a fortified farmstead or minor lordship centre during the medieval period, when such structures dotted the Cavan landscape.

Today, visitors to the site will find no visible traces above ground level; centuries of agricultural activity and natural erosion have completely obscured any physical evidence of the fortification. The only record of its existence now lies in historical maps and archaeological surveys, serving as a reminder of the countless medieval sites that once shaped Ireland’s rural landscape but have since returned to the earth. The site’s documentation forms part of the Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan, published in 1995, which catalogues these forgotten pieces of Ireland’s medieval heritage.
