This square enclosure, measuring approximately 30 metres north to south and 29 metres east to west, first appeared on Ordnance Survey maps in 1839 and again in 1925, where it was marked as a distinctive double-banked rectangular feature. Today, the site is covered in scrub vegetation, but its impressive defensive earthworks remain clearly visible in the landscape.

The site’s most striking feature is its substantial flat-bottomed moat, which completely encircles the central area. The moat varies in depth around the perimeter; at its western side, it reaches its most dramatic proportions with a top width of 9 metres narrowing to just 2 metres at the base, creating an internal depth of 2 metres and an external depth of 3.2 metres. The eastern section is noticeably shallower, with a top width of 9.5 metres tapering to 5 metres at the base, and depths of 1 metre internally and 2.9 metres externally. This variation in depth might suggest different phases of construction or perhaps a response to the natural topography of the site.

Adding to the site’s defensive capabilities, an external bank surrounds the moat on all sides. This earthen rampart, which measures approximately 5 metres wide and rises 2 metres high on the eastern side, would have provided an additional barrier to any potential attackers whilst also serving as a vantage point for defenders. Such moated sites were typically constructed by Anglo-Norman settlers or prosperous Irish families between the 13th and 17th centuries, serving as fortified farmsteads or minor manorial centres that combined residential, agricultural, and defensive functions.
