This rectangular earthwork, measuring approximately 32 metres north to south and 30 metres east to west, represents a type of defensive homestead that was particularly common in medieval Ireland between the 13th and 14th centuries.

The site is defined by what were once water-filled moats, now visible as slight depressions in the grass-covered ground. These flat-bottomed ditches, roughly 2 metres wide and originally 2 to 3 metres deep, would have surrounded a raised platform where a timber hall or farmstead once stood. When surveyed in 1979, the moated area measured slightly smaller at 24 by 23 metres, though subsequent investigations in 1988 revealed the fuller extent of the earthworks.

Moated sites like this one at Slaght were typically built by Anglo-Norman settlers or prosperous Irish families during the medieval period. They served both defensive and status purposes; the water-filled moats provided protection from raiders whilst also demonstrating the wealth and importance of the inhabitants. Today, though the buildings have long since vanished, the earthwork remains as a subtle but significant reminder of medieval settlement patterns in County Wexford.
