At the base of a gentle south-facing slope in Tullohea, County Tipperary South, lies a medieval moated site that offers a fascinating glimpse into Ireland's defensive past.

The monument sits on flat terrain, surrounded by pasture to the east and south, tillage fields to the north, and an abandoned silage pit to the west. A nearby stream has been cleverly incorporated into the site’s defensive design, flowing at an angle into the southeast corner of the fosse, the water-filled ditch that encircles the entire structure.

The moated site is defined by a slight earthen bank, measuring 1.3 metres across at its crest and 1.7 metres at its base. This bank has largely been reduced to a scarp about 1.65 metres high, except at the corners and along the western side where it remains more intact. The bank drops steeply into a wide, flat-bottomed fosse that measures 2.26 metres across and 0.77 metres deep. This defensive ditch channels not only the nearby stream but also natural springs that appear to rise within the fosse itself, particularly in the northeastern and northwestern sections. The outer edge, or counterscarp, rises steeply from the water, though modern activity has altered its original form; the northern side has become a dumping ground for large boulders and agricultural waste, whilst the western side has been built up with soil from the excavated silage pit.

Today, the interior of the monument is heavily planted with conifers, making only the outer edges accessible to visitors. The western section of the fosse has narrowed considerably due to slippage from the augmented counterscarp, and stone walls now cut across the ditch at two points: a more substantial wall at the northern end of the western side and a rubble stone wall at the northern end of the eastern side. The scarp at the western end of the northern side shows signs of reduction in height, possibly from cattle trampling before the interior was planted with trees. Despite these modern alterations, the site remains an impressive example of medieval defensive architecture, demonstrating how natural water features were incorporated into fortified settlements across medieval Ireland.
