Visible on the 1939 Ordnance Survey six-inch map, this earthwork measures approximately 50 metres east to west and 40 metres north to south. Though time has largely erased its physical presence from the landscape, a faint rise along the northern bank still hints at the defensive earthworks that once stood here.

Just 60 metres to the southwest lies a more substantial moated site, suggesting this area held particular importance during the medieval period. These paired defensive structures were common in medieval Ireland, where Anglo-Norman settlers and Gaelic Irish alike constructed fortified homesteads to protect their families and livestock. The rectangular shape of the Tullyland enclosure points to Anglo-Norman influence, as Gaelic settlements typically favoured circular designs.

Today, visitors to the site will need a keen eye and perhaps some imagination to trace the outline of these ancient boundaries. The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork first documented these features in 1992, recognising their significance despite their subtle appearance. Such sites offer valuable glimpses into Ireland’s complex medieval landscape, where communities carved out defended spaces in an often uncertain world, leaving behind these faint but enduring marks on the countryside.
