The mound rises 4.3 metres high, with its flat top measuring roughly 8.5 metres north to south and 7 metres east to west, whilst the base extends to 21 metres at its widest point. Its distinctive D-shape isn’t original; quarrying work on the northeastern side has altered what was likely once a more symmetrical structure. Today, coniferous trees grow across the overgrown site, and notably, there’s no evidence of a fosse, or defensive ditch, which would typically surround such fortifications.

Connected to the south of the mound lies what archaeologists interpret as a possible bailey, a fortified courtyard that would have served as an outer defence and activity area for the motte. This grass-covered enclosure spans 44 metres east to west and 40 metres north to south, defined by a scarp that reaches up to 0.7 metres in height. Traces of a fosse can be detected along the southern edge of this enclosure, suggesting it once provided additional protection for this secondary defensive space.

The strategic importance of this location becomes clearer when considering its proximity to a tower house situated approximately 150 metres to the east. This clustering of defensive structures indicates the area held significant value during the medieval period, likely serving as a local power centre where Norman or Anglo-Norman lords could maintain control over the surrounding landscape and its inhabitants. The combination of motte, possible bailey, and nearby tower house represents a typical progression of Irish fortification styles from the 12th through to the 16th centuries.
