At Camas in County Limerick, a circular mound that once rose from the surrounding pasture has been levelled entirely, leaving behind little more than a patch of uneven, stony ground about ten metres across, choked with briars and nettles. The level grass field around it makes the contrast all the more legible: here, the ground simply refuses to behave.

The mound was recorded on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1924, where it appeared as a clearly defined circular feature with a diameter of roughly ten metres. Such earthen mounds in the Irish landscape can serve a range of origins, from prehistoric burial mounds to the remnants of much later agricultural or enclosure features, but whatever this one was, it did not survive the intervening decades intact. By the time Denis Power compiled the site record, uploaded in August 2011, the mound itself was gone. What remained was identified purely by the character of the ground: that patch of disturbed, stony earth, slightly irregular underfoot, marking a spot where something once stood above the surrounding field.

For anyone inclined to seek it out, the experience is necessarily understated. The site sits in level pasture, and without prior knowledge of its recorded location, the briar-covered hollow would read simply as a neglected corner of a working field. There is no marker, no protected enclosure. The value here is less in what can be seen and more in the act of looking carefully at ordinary ground and recognising that the landscape keeps a kind of memory even when the feature it once held has been removed. Landowner permission should be sought before entering any private agricultural land, and the site is unlikely to reward a visit without a copy of the relevant OS map sheet for orientation.
