Mound, Templemoyle, Co. Donegal

In the townland of Templemoyle in County Donegal lies a fascinating ecclesiastical complex that offers a glimpse into centuries of Irish religious practice.

Mound, Templemoyle, Co. Donegal

The site centres around a modern rectangular graveyard measuring 22 metres north to south and 20.5 metres east to west. Just north of this, visitors will find a smaller sub-rectangular enclosure, approximately 12 by 10.4 metres, surrounded by a stone wall standing about a metre high. This walled area, which appears to have an entrance on its southern side, likely marks the location of an earlier religious structure or sacred space.

The eastern portion of the complex contains particularly intriguing features. Here stands a distinctive D-shaped mound constructed of earth and stone, rising to about 1.5 metres in height and spanning 8 metres across, with its flat edge facing east. This mound may represent an ancient burial site or ceremonial platform. Adjoining the mound’s western side are the remains of a small circular stone foundation, just over 2 metres in diameter, which could be the base of an early church or oratory. A small stone cross still stands within the interior of the complex, serving as a tangible link to the site’s religious past.

Local tradition connects this place to St. Adomnán, the 7th-century abbot of Iona and biographer of St. Columba. Though now destroyed, the site once featured a holy well and a dallan, or pillar stone, both dedicated to the saint. These lost features, recorded in local memory and earlier surveys, suggest that Templemoyle served as a place of pilgrimage and devotion for many generations. The complex represents a typical Irish ecclesiastical site where layers of religious activity, from early medieval times through to the present day, have accumulated to create a rich archaeological and spiritual landscape.
