Within the moated grounds of what was once a formidable medieval stronghold, the ruins of Park Castle stand as a weathered testament to 13th-century Norman ambitions in County Galway.

Known locally by its Irish name ‘Cloch na pairce’, meaning ‘stone of the field’, this rectangular tower house once stretched more than 14.7 metres in length and approximately 10.7 metres in width. Today, only fragments of the south, west and north walls remain standing, along with a small section of the southeast corner; enough to hint at the building’s original two-storey design and defensive character.

The surviving stonework reveals intriguing architectural details typical of early medieval fortifications in Ireland. The walls feature a distinctive sharp base batter, a sloped foundation that helped deflect projectiles and strengthened the structure against siege warfare. Narrow slit windows punctuate each of the remaining ground floor walls, their wide internal splays still visible despite centuries of decay. These openings served a dual purpose; they allowed defenders to fire arrows whilst remaining protected, and the splayed interior maximised the limited light entering what would have been a rather dim stone interior.

Archaeological surveys conducted for the Archaeological Inventory of County Galway suggest this poorly preserved structure dates to the 1200s, placing it within the early period of Anglo-Norman castle building in the west of Ireland. The moated site setting, recorded in O’Flanagan’s 1927 documentation, indicates this was once a well-defended position, with water defences supplementing the stone fortifications. Though time and the Irish weather have taken their toll on Park Castle, these remnants offer a tangible connection to the medieval landscape of north Galway, when such fortified dwellings dotted the countryside as symbols of power and control.
