Promontory fort - coastal, Toraigh, Co. Donegal
These coastal fortifications, built on naturally defensive headlands jutting into the Atlantic, were common throughout Ireland during the Iron Age and early medieval periods. The fort’s strategic position would have offered its occupants commanding views across the surrounding waters, providing early warning of approaching vessels whilst the steep cliffs formed natural barriers on multiple sides.
