Mining
On the northern face of a small hillock in the undulating pastureland of Kilnamullaun, there are disused sand and gravel pits that earned a kind of cartographic dignity they perhaps never deserved.
On the 1945 revision of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map, the site appears as a hachured feature, the fine lines used by cartographers to suggest relief and surface irregularity, implying something of topographic or possibly archaeological interest. When someone finally went to look in 1984, the feature turned out to be the remains of old extraction pits, almost certainly worked for local construction or road-making purposes, and of no particular antiquity.
