On a mid-twentieth-century Ordnance Survey map of Lisdooaun, a small hachured marking sits quietly among the contour lines.
Hachures, the short radiating strokes cartographers use to suggest slopes or depressions, are more often associated with ancient earthworks or ring forts, so the feature warranted a closer look. When someone eventually took that look, in 1984, they found not a prehistoric monument but a disused quarry, almost certainly worked sometime after 1700 and long since abandoned to the Galway landscape.
