In the townland of An Charraig in County Donegal, a curious absence marks the landscape where a ringfort once stood.

While the second edition of the Ordnance Survey 6-inch map clearly documented a single-ringed enclosure at this location, today no visible trace remains of this ancient settlement. The site occupied what locals still refer to as a ‘cashel’, a rocky platform roughly 25 metres across that rises slightly above the surrounding countryside.

This vanished ringfort would have been typical of the enclosed farmsteads that dotted the Irish landscape during the early medieval period. These circular settlements, defended by earthen banks or stone walls, served as homes for farming families and their livestock between roughly 500 and 1200 AD. The platform at An Charraig, with its naturally defensive position on rocky ground, would have made an ideal location for such a homestead.

Today, the area where the ringfort once stood consists of lightly soiled fields used for tillage and pasture, punctuated by occasional outcrops of the underlying rock. The complete disappearance of the enclosure’s physical features likely resulted from centuries of agricultural activity; ploughing, stone clearance, and field improvements gradually erasing what remained of the ancient banks or walls. This archaeological information was recorded as part of the comprehensive Archaeological Survey of County Donegal, compiled by Brian Lacey and his team in 1983, which documented field antiquities from the Mesolithic period through to the 17th century.
