Ringfort (Cashel), Breaghy, Ards, Co. Donegal

On an elevated rocky platform about 250 metres south of the shore in Breaghy, County Donegal, sits the remains of an ancient cashel, its stone walls now largely collapsed but still tracing the outline of what was once a substantial fortified settlement.

This subcircular enclosure measures roughly 17 metres from north-northwest to south-southeast and 15 metres from east-northeast to west-southwest. The structure would have served as a defended farmstead during Ireland’s early medieval period, providing protection for a family group and their livestock whilst offering commanding views across the surrounding grazing land dotted with rock outcrops.

The most intact sections of the cashel’s defensive wall can be found along the northeastern and southeastern portions, where careful observation reveals the construction techniques of its ancient builders. A 10-metre stretch of the outer wall face on the northeast side shows contiguously placed stone blocks, whilst a 5-metre section of inner wall face remains visible on the southeast. Here, the wall reaches its most impressive dimensions at 2.35 metres wide and up to half a metre in height. The rest of the circuit has suffered more severely from stone robbing over the centuries, with only occasional in situ stones and a slight, grass-covered stony bank marking where the wall once stood in its full height.

The interior of the cashel slopes gently downwards from west to east, a detail that would have aided drainage in this often wet climate. Two small stone enclosures built in more recent times sit just outside the main wall; one to the southeast and another along the northern wall line, likely constructed by later farmers reusing the readily available stone. This archaeological site was documented in the comprehensive Archaeological Survey of County Donegal (1983), compiled by Brian Lacey and his team, which catalogued field antiquities from the Mesolithic period through to the 17th century.
