On Croaghan Island in County Donegal, a mysterious stone enclosure sits at the southeastern tip of this small, hump-backed island in Mulroy Bay.

The island itself is easily reached from the mainland; at low tide, a narrow channel becomes a natural gravelly causeway, augmented in recent times with roughly piled boulders and fragments of concrete. Once across, visitors find themselves in a landscape engulfed by hazel and blackthorn scrub, with dense brambles and bracken making exploration challenging.

The enclosure, which may be an ancient cashel or a later construction, cleverly exploits the island’s natural terrain. It forms a subcircular area roughly 65 to 70 metres north to south and 60 metres east to west, defined along its western arc by what appears to be a slumped stone bank. This wall, now mostly concealed by vegetation, consists of large stones without obvious masonry work, rising 1.5 to 2 metres wide where visible. The eastern boundary follows the natural cliff edge that drops to the water below, whilst the northern section disappears into an impenetrable thicket, making it impossible to trace the complete circuit. A gap in the western wall may mark an original entrance.

The interior slopes gently from west to centre before levelling out, and is strewn with stones beneath the overgrowth. A linear stony feature running north to south possibly divides the space, whilst rock outcrops protrude in the northeastern section. In the level southeastern quadrant sits a rectangular enclosure of uncertain function and date. From the rocky summit dominating the island’s northern half, excellent views stretch along the length of the inlet, suggesting this location held strategic importance. Though difficult to date precisely and absent from historic Ordnance Survey maps, this enigmatic structure offers a tantalising glimpse into the island’s past, whether as a defensive cashel or a later agricultural enclosure.
