Ringfort (Cashel), Crossard, Co. Clare

At the south-western corner of a plateau in County Clare, a collapsed stone enclosure sits in dense hazel growth above a ten-metre ravine drop, its walls long since fallen into a rubble spread.

This is a cashel, the Irish term for a stone-walled ringfort, a type of enclosed farmstead built in early medieval Ireland, typically between the sixth and tenth centuries, to protect a household and its livestock. What makes this particular example quietly strange is the way its own material has been cannibalised over time: stone from the collapsed walls has been lifted and reused to build a later drystone wall running along the outer face from east to south, now standing 1.3 metres high.

The interior of the enclosure measures roughly 16.6 metres north to south and 15.1 metres east to west, giving a sense of the original scale, which would have been a moderately sized homestead. The outer dimensions extend to 27.4 metres north to south, suggesting the original walls were substantial. Today that wall survives only as a stone spread, widest at the north at around eight metres, with an interior height of just one metre and an exterior height of 0.7 metres. On the southern and western sides, where the plateau meets the ravine, the spread narrows to between two and 2.5 metres wide, and the outer facing of the original wall is still visible right at the cliff edge. Field walls branch off the remains at the north-east, east, and south-east, evidence that later agricultural activity drew on the cashel as a convenient source of ready-cut stone, effectively writing successive centuries of land use directly into the structure's decay.
