Ringfort (Cashel), Kilbarron, Co. Donegal

In the townland of Kilbarron, near Ballyshannon in County Donegal, little remains of what was once a cashel, a type of stone ringfort that dotted the Irish landscape for centuries.

The fortification sat atop a high east-west ridge surrounded by rocky pasture, but its stones were carted away within living memory, leaving no discernible features of the original structure. Today, visitors would find it difficult to imagine the defensive walls that once stood here, as the site has been thoroughly dismantled by generations of local farmers who likely repurposed the stones for field walls and buildings.

Archaeological testing in 2007 revealed just how thoroughly the cashel had vanished from the landscape. When archaeologist Richard Crumlish excavated five trenches across the site in preparation for new construction, he found only natural soil layers beneath the topsoil; orange and brown clays, sandy loams, and bedrock, with modern pottery sherds and even plastic debris mixed into the upper fills. The excavation confirmed what local memory already knew: whatever ancient structure once crowned this ridge had been completely removed, leaving behind only its location in the archaeological record.

The Kilbarron cashel represents a common fate for many of Ireland’s estimated 45,000 ringforts. These circular defensive homesteads, built primarily between 500 and 1000 AD, were once the most common settlement type in early medieval Ireland. While some survive as impressive earthworks or stone ruins, countless others exist only as place names, crop marks, or entries in archaeological surveys, their stones long since recycled into the fabric of the modern countryside. The site at Kilbarron, recorded in the Archaeological Survey of County Donegal but absent from the physical landscape, serves as a reminder of how much of Ireland’s ancient heritage has been quietly absorbed back into the land.
