Ringfort (Cashel), Kill (Dunfanaghy Ed), Co. Donegal

In the townland of Kill, near Dunfanaghy in County Donegal, the remains of an ancient ringfort cashel sit atop a rocky mound that commands views across the surrounding landscape.

The site consists of an oval stone enclosure measuring approximately 18 metres north to south and 10 metres east to west, though centuries of weathering and human activity have taken their toll. The surviving stone wall, built without mortar in the traditional cashel style, stands up to half a metre high in places and spreads to about 1.5 metres wide, though much of the northern and western sections have been dismantled over the years, with modern field boundaries now following the original perimeter.

What makes this particular cashel intriguing is the evidence of a possible outer defensive wall, traces of which can still be detected about 10 metres beyond the main enclosure on the eastern and southern sides, where the ground slopes more gently away from the central mound. This double wall system, whilst not uncommon in Irish ringforts, suggests the site may have held particular importance or required additional protection during its active period, likely sometime between the early medieval period and the 17th century.

Today, the site lies overgrown and peaceful, its strategic position on the rocky outcrop still evident despite the encroaching vegetation. The steep drops to the north and west that once provided natural defence now offer visitors who make the trek a glimpse into how Iron Age and early medieval communities chose their settlement locations; places that balanced defensive advantages with access to agricultural land on the gentler slopes below. The cashel stands as one of many such monuments documented in the Archaeological Survey of County Donegal, each one a reminder of the complex network of settlements that once dotted this Atlantic coastline.
