Ringfort (Cashel), Kilpatrick, Co. Wicklow

On a north-east-facing slope in Kilpatrick, County Wicklow, a near-perfect circle of stone sits quietly in the landscape, its proportions modest but its origins ancient.

This is a cashel, the term used for a ringfort constructed from stone rather than the earthen banks and ditches more commonly associated with the type. Where many of its counterparts have been ploughed out or absorbed into field boundaries over the centuries, this one retains enough of its fabric to read clearly on the ground.

The enclosure measures roughly 22.5 metres in diameter, defined by a stone bank approximately two metres wide and standing between 0.8 and one metre high. What makes it particularly legible is the revetment, a facing of low slabs set lengthways along the bank, which gives the structure its dressed, deliberate quality. A possible entrance, around four metres wide, opens to the north. There is no detectable fosse, the term for a surrounding ditch, and no obvious trace of internal features such as house platforms or souterrains, the underground stone-lined passages sometimes found within Irish ringforts. Cashels of this kind are generally associated with the early medieval period, roughly the fifth to the twelfth centuries, when enclosed farmsteads were the dominant form of rural settlement across Ireland. The siting at a break in the slope is typical of the type, offering a natural defensible advantage while keeping the enclosure visible in the wider terrain.
