Ringfort (Cashel), Kinnagoe, Co. Donegal

On the lower eastern slope of Kinnagoe Hill in County Donegal, a modest arc of stones marks all that remains of what was once a subcircular ringfort, or cashel.

These weathered stones, set amongst rough and rocky terrain, represent only a small portion of the original structure that appeared on early Ordnance Survey maps from the 19th century. The surviving stones likely formed part of a double wall construction; an inner and outer facing that would have contained a rubble or small stone core, a building technique commonly employed in ancient Irish fortifications.

Ringforts like this one at Kinnagoe were amongst the most common settlement types in early medieval Ireland, typically dating from around 500 to 1200 CE. These circular or near circular enclosures, whether built of earth or stone, served as defended homesteads for farming families. The stone variety, known as cashels, were particularly prevalent in areas where suitable stone was readily available, as is the case in this rocky part of Donegal.

Though only this fragmentary arc survives today, the site offers a tangible connection to the everyday lives of those who inhabited this hillside centuries ago. The location itself would have been carefully chosen, providing views across the surrounding landscape whilst remaining sheltered from the worst of the Atlantic weather. These remnants, documented in the Archaeological Survey of County Donegal, stand as quiet testimony to a once thriving settlement that formed part of the complex tapestry of early Irish rural life.
