Ringfort, Clonbrock Demesne, Co. Galway

In the level grassland of the former Clonbrock estate in County Galway, a faint circular ridge in the ground marks the outline of a ringfort that has been quietly losing its shape for centuries.

A rath, as this type of enclosure is known, was typically a circular earthwork defined by one or more banks and ditches, used throughout early medieval Ireland as a farmstead or settlement. This one survives as a degraded bank just over twenty-five metres in diameter, interrupted in two places by a field wall that cuts across it at the north and south, and punctuated by a number of more recent breaches.
