In the pastoral landscape west of Shanaghan Lough in County Donegal, a curious mark on old Ordnance Survey maps hints at a vanished piece of Ireland's ancient past.

Ringfort, Crannogeboy, Co. Donegal

The first and second editions of the OS 6-inch maps, drawn up in the 19th century, show a single-ringed fort at this location; a ringfort that has since completely disappeared from the physical landscape. Today, visitors to this spot in Crannogeboy would find only fairly good pasture land, with no visible trace of the defensive structure that once stood here.

Ringforts, also known as raths or cashels depending on their construction, were amongst the most common settlement types in early medieval Ireland, typically dating from around 500 to 1200 AD. These circular enclosures, surrounded by earthen banks and ditches or stone walls, served as fortified homesteads for farming families. The fact that this particular fort appears on historical maps but has left no physical remains is not unusual; many of Ireland’s estimated 45,000 ringforts have been levelled over the centuries through agricultural improvement, particularly during the 18th and 19th centuries when landowners sought to maximise productive farmland.

The documentation of this lost fort comes from the comprehensive Archaeological Survey of County Donegal, compiled by Brian Lacey and his team in 1983. This survey represents one of the most thorough catalogues of Donegal’s archaeological heritage, documenting field antiquities from the Mesolithic period through to the 17th century. While the Crannogeboy ringfort itself may be lost to time, its inclusion in both the historical maps and modern archaeological records ensures that this small piece of Ireland’s settlement history isn’t entirely forgotten.
