That hollow, scattered with loose boulders, raises an intriguing possibility: that whoever quarried here may have broken into, or been searching for, a souterrain, an underground stone-lined passage or chamber typically used in early Irish settlement sites for storage or refuge. No walling survives, no lintels remain, but the shape and context are suggestive enough to keep the question open.

The site is a subrectangular rath, roughly 41.5 metres east to west and 38.5 metres north to south, defined by two earthen banks with a fosse, or ditch, running between them. This double-banked arrangement places it among the more elaborate class of ringfort, a type of enclosed farmstead that was the dominant settlement form in Ireland from roughly the fifth to the twelfth centuries. At the northern side, a stone wall follows the line of the fosse, though the outer bank beyond it has disappeared entirely. The inner bank has been disturbed by quarrying at both the north-west and the south, and a causeway crosses the fosse at the south, though it may be a relatively recent addition rather than an original feature. The effect is of a monument that has been gradually reduced from both within and without, its original symmetry quietly eroded over generations of small-scale extraction and disturbance.

The site sits on a hill summit amid gently undulating grassland, which would have made it conspicuous in the early medieval landscape, a deliberate statement of presence and control over the surrounding terrain. What remains is enough to read the form, even if much of the detail has been lost.
