On the northern slopes of Benniwee in County Donegal, there once stood a ringfort that has since vanished from the landscape.

Ringfort, Freehold, Co. Donegal

This oval, single-ringed fort appears on the first edition of the Ordnance Survey 6-inch map, marking its presence in what is now cultivated farmland. Like many of Ireland’s ancient earthworks, time and agriculture have erased all physical traces of this defensive structure, leaving only cartographic evidence of its existence.

Ringforts, also known as raths or cashels when built with stone, were the most common type of settlement in early medieval Ireland, typically dating from around 500 to 1000 AD. These circular or oval enclosures, defined by earthen banks and ditches, served as fortified homesteads for farming families. The single ring at Benniwee suggests it was likely home to a family of moderate social standing; wealthier or more important individuals often occupied multivallate forts with two or three defensive rings.

The documentation of this lost fort comes from the comprehensive Archaeological Survey of County Donegal, compiled in 1983 by Brian Lacey and his team of researchers. This survey catalogued the county’s field antiquities spanning from the Mesolithic period through to the 17th century, preserving knowledge of sites like Benniwee that might otherwise be completely forgotten. While the fort itself has returned to the earth, its record serves as a reminder of the thousands of similar settlements that once dotted the Irish countryside, each one a small piece in the complex mosaic of early Irish society.
