Ringfort, Gortnaglogh, Co. Galway

A narrow gap in the earth, less than two metres wide, may be all that remains of a doorway through which people passed perhaps a thousand or more years ago.

At Gortnaglogh in County Galway, a subcircular rath sits quietly in the landscape, its original form now only partially legible, readable more through changes in vegetation than through any dramatic earthwork.

A rath is an early medieval enclosure, typically dating from roughly the fifth to the twelfth century, formed by one or more banks of earth and an accompanying fosse, or ditch, dug to provide the material for the bank. They served as enclosed farmsteads, the raised perimeter offering both a degree of protection and a clear boundary for livestock and household. The Gortnaglogh example measures approximately 33 metres east to west and 30 metres north to south, making it a modest but reasonably typical size. What survives of its defining bank is heavily degraded, and the external fosse no longer reads as a clear depression; instead, it shows itself as a band of different vegetation running from the north-northwest, around through the east, to the west-southwest. That kind of ghost outline, where soil moisture or nutrient levels altered by ancient digging continue to influence what grows, is often the only trace such sites leave on the surface. A gap of around 1.9 metres on the eastern-southeastern side may represent the original entrance. A later field boundary has been laid directly over the southern arc of the bank, an everyday act of agricultural reuse that has further obscured the earlier monument. Roughly 100 metres to the southwest lies a separate enclosure, suggesting this part of north Galway held more than one focus of early settlement activity in the same general area.
