Ringfort (Rath), Ahane, Co. Cork

What makes this north Cork ringfort quietly peculiar is not the earthwork itself but what appears to have grown inside it.

Sitting atop a ridge in open pasture with wide views in all directions, the roughly circular enclosure at Ahane measures around 35 metres across and is enclosed by an earthen bank and an external fosse, the shallow ditch that typically runs around the outside of such early medieval enclosures. A causewayed entrance, essentially a gap left in the bank with the fosse bridged over, opens to the north-north-west at about two metres wide. In the southern half of the interior, a substantial earthen mound around a metre and a half high sits in a position that would be unremarkable in most raths, except that the 1842 Ordnance Survey six-inch map records two lime kilns on this spot. Lime kilns were common agricultural structures used to burn limestone and produce quicklime for fertilising fields, and it seems likely the mound is their degraded remains rather than any ancient feature.

When Bowman recorded the site in 1934, the picture was somewhat different. Writing in what he described as a double-ramparted fort on land belonging to a J. O'Keeffe, he noted that roughly half of the outer rampart was still standing, measuring between six and nine feet in height. At that point three lime kilns were visible, two within the outer rampart and one within the inner, suggesting the enclosure had been put to agricultural use at some point after its original purpose as a defended farmstead had long passed. The possible presence of a souterrain, an underground stone-lined passage sometimes used for storage or refuge, adds a further layer of interest to the interior, though its precise form and condition remain uncertain. The site is now heavily overgrown, and the earthworks that Bowman could still read with some clarity have become considerably harder to trace.
