Ringfort (Rath), Ballingaddy, Co. Clare

Sitting in a meadow of hilly pasture at Ballingaddy, surrounded by marsh and scrub, this ringfort is the kind of place that rewards a second look.

A rath, to use the Irish term, is a roughly circular earthwork enclosure, typically dating from the early medieval period and associated with farmstead settlement. This one is nearly symmetrical, measuring 23 metres north to south and just under 22 metres east to west, and it has survived in enough detail to show how its builders thought about defence and approach. The interior is flat and featureless now, but the surrounding earthworks still carry genuine structural information.

The enclosure is defined by a steep-sided, round-topped bank, a fosse (a defensive ditch), and an outer bank beyond that. What makes the site slightly unusual is that the fosse and outer bank are not continuous all the way around. They appear only on the northern arc, running from the north-west to the north-east, which suggests that extra defensive effort was concentrated on the side with the clearest open approach. The southern and eastern sides are overlooked by higher ground, perhaps making an elaborate outer ditch less necessary there. Stone survives within the fabric of both banks, indicating that they were originally revetted, meaning faced with stone to hold the earthen material in place and steepen the profile. An original entrance gap, 3.4 metres wide at its base, is still legible at the north-west. The site was recorded on Ordnance Survey six-inch maps in both 1840 and 1916, marked with the hachure symbol used to indicate earthworks, so its presence in the landscape has been noted for well over a century. The views it commands to the north and west are still unobstructed, a reminder that whoever built here chose the spot with some care.
