In the grazing fields above the Drung river in Ballyargus, County Donegal, the remains of an ancient ringfort tell a story spanning centuries.

This circular earthwork, known locally as a rath, measures approximately 45 metres across from north to south, though time and agriculture have left their mark. A modern field boundary now cuts straight through the middle of what was once a complete defensive ring, splitting this Iron Age monument into two unequal halves.

The northwestern section preserves the site’s most impressive features, with an earthen bank built atop solid rock foundations still standing up to 0.7 metres high. Southeast of the dividing fence, only the faintest traces of the original embankment remain visible in the grass. What might appear to be elaborate outer defences; a fosse and secondary fortification; are actually the result of more recent quarrying activities along the natural rock ridge that borders the site to the north and west. This quarried area took on a particularly solemn purpose in local memory, serving as a children’s burial ground marked by small stones that locals believe indicate individual graves.

From this elevated position on the southwest slope, the ringfort commands excellent views across Lough Foyle, explaining why this spot was chosen for settlement perhaps 1,500 years ago. Like many of Ireland’s estimated 45,000 ringforts, this example likely housed an extended family group and their livestock, with the circular bank providing both a practical boundary and a symbol of status in early medieval society. Today, cattle still graze where their ancient counterparts once sheltered, maintaining a pastoral continuity that stretches back over a millennium.
